Rogers Cup: Heather Watson reaches second round in Montreal

Watson won the women's doubles title at the Baku Cup last month

British number one Heather Watson advanced to the second round of the Rogers Cup with a 6-4 5-7 6-4 win over Czech Tereza Smitkova.

The world number 57 had already won two qualifying matches to reach the main draw in Montreal and she continued her good form with a hard-fought win.

Watson let slip three break points as she surrendered the second set, but held her nerve to win the decider.

She will next meet either Francoise Abanda or 10th seed Dominika Cibulkova.
