Jamie Murray beat younger brother Andy in their first senior competitive meeting, teaming up with John Peers to win in the second round of the men's doubles at the Rogers Cup in Montreal.

Jamie and Peers beat Andy and Leander Paes 6-4 7-6 (11-9).

The latter pair recovered from 5-1 down to level the second-set tie-break but could not deny the seventh seeds.

Andy - Britain's number one - earlier reached the last eight of the singles, beating Gilles Muller 6-3 6-2.

The 28-year-old had to save four break points in his opening service game but was never troubled after that, securing victory in 65 minutes.

The 2013 Wimbledon champion had enough energy left to give his 29-year-old brother - and Davis Cup team-mate - a scare when they took to the court just over an hour later.

Andy and Paes saved two match points and had chances to win the second set, but the Wimbledon finalists moved through to round three.

Jamie, the 2007 Wimbledon mixed doubles champion, said: "It's weird to not get really pumped up when you play and every time you look down the other side of the net, that's your brother there.

"I think Andy and I did a pretty good job of dealing with the situation, which was obviously not that natural. We're happy to win."

His younger brother said the match was "awkward".

"I always support him to win those matches," added Andy. "The atmosphere is a bit awkward for everyone involved.

"I don't want to be fist pumping and getting in Jamie's face and his partner's."

Top seed Novak Djokovic reached the last eight of the singles with the loss of three games, winning 6-2 6-1 against Jack Sock of the USA.

Fourth seed Kei Nishikori proved too strong for 13th seed David Goffin, winning 6-4 6-4 to book a quarter-final against Rafa Nadal, after the three-time champion beat Russian qualifier Mikhail Youzhny 6-3 6-3.

American John Isner beat controversial Australian Nick Kyrgios 7-5 6-3.

In the women's draw in Toronto, world number one and three-time champion Serena Williams beat Andrea Petkovic 6-3 6-2 to reach the quarter-finals.

Simona Halep eventually overcame Angelique Kerber 6-3 5-7 6-4 to book a quarter-final against Agnieszka Radwanska.

Swiss teenager Belinda Bencic beat German Sabine Lisicki 6-1 1-6 7-6 (7-3).
