Linlithgow's Colin Fleming and partner Treat Huey have knocked out the fifth seeds to progress to the second round of the US Open doubles.

They defeated Italians Fabio Fognini and Simone Bolelli, winning the third set tie-break 8-6.

"I'm buzzing with the result," Fleming told BBC Scotland.

"I thought we deserved it, we outplayed them in the first set. We came up with a couple of nice points at the end there."

The team only agreed to pair up on the mobile phone app Whatsapp in the run-up to the tournament, and have never played doubles together before.

Fleming, 31, said: "We were both free agents so to speak. We messaged each other, figured out with our rankings we could get in together (to the US Open). I'm delighted we're playing together now.

"I don't know who we face next. We had such a tough first round draw I didn't look any further than that.

"We'll refocus and do what we did today which was just enjoy it and go for it. Obviously we've proved we can play well and good things can happen."
