Britons Johanna Konta and Heather Watson have progressed to the second round of the Hong Kong Open.

British number one Konta, 25, beat compatriot Naomi Broady 6-2 6-2 in one hour and 19 minutes, setting up a tie with Wang Qiang of China.

Watson beat Marina Erakovic, 44 places below her in the rankings, 7-5 7-6 (11-9) at Victoria Park Tennis Stadium.

The 24-year-old will next play former world number one Caroline Wozniacki, who earlier beat Saisai Zheng of China.

Konta's win comes after she became the first British woman for 32 years to make the world top 10 by reaching the final of the China Open last week.

"The scoreline doesn't really reflect the match," she said of Tuesday's win. "You can see in the length of the match how tight it was.

"I'm really happy with the level I've been playing and the amount of matches I've been able to play in succession. I'm hoping to keep going like this."

The win also moves the Briton closer to qualifying for the season-ending WTA Finals in Singapore for the first time.

"I'm trying not to think about it," she said. "It really depends on how other players do as well."
