Kyle Edmund beats Illya Marchenko at European Open in Antwerp

Edmund began the year ranked outside the world's top 100

British number two Kyle Edmund came through two tie-breaks to beat Ukraine's Illya Marchenko and reach the second round of the European Open.

Edmund, who reached a career-high ranking of 43 on Monday, won 7-6 (9-7) 7-6 (7-5) and goes on to face Spain's second seed David Ferrer in Antwerp.

The 21-year-old from Yorkshire fought back from a break down in both sets before edging through the tie-breaks.

World number 12 David Goffin of Belgium is the top seed in Antwerp.
