Wimbledon champion Garbine Muguruza saw off Varvara Lepchenko 6-0 6-3 to reach the second round of the US Open.
The Spaniard, 23, raced through the first set in 21 minutes as she dominated the American in the Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York.
Muguruza will face China's Duan Yingying in round two.
Petra Kvitova beat 2008 finalist Jelena Jankovic 7-5 7-5 to set up a second-round meeting with Alize Cornet, who beat Britain's Heather Watson.
Muguruza, who is yet to get beyond the second round at Flushing Meadows, said: "Coming to the US Open and having a dark past in the results, I keep it with low expectations.
"I take every match as a final. I love the big stage, I love to go on Arthur Ashe Stadium and have the crowd enjoying the match.
"With the matches that I played in the past tournaments, I just think it didn't go my way - as simple as that, because I always come prepared and happy."
