Estonia's Anett Kontaveit became the highest seed to be knocked out of Wimbledon so far as she was beaten in straight sets by German Jule Niemeier.

World number 97 Niemeier overpowered the second seed to win 6-4 6-0.

"Amazing. I am speechless to be honest," said the 22-year-old Niemeier after reaching the third round.

Garbine Muguruza also made an early exit - the Spanish ninth seed, who won the title in 2017, was beaten 6-4 6-0 by Belgium's Greet Minnen.

Kontaveit, 26, has spoken about suffering from the longer-term effects of Covid and arrived at SW19 having not played since the French Open in May.

Niemeier added: "It is one of the biggest wins of my career so far.

"Winning at Wimbledon on Court One is an amazing feeling. I am happy I could handle the situation today. I love playing on grass."

Meanwhile, sixth seed Karolina Pliskova finished what she started on Tuesday night by defeating fellow Czech Tereza Martincova after the resumption of their match.

The 30-year-old, who was beaten by Ashleigh Barty in last year's final, won 7-6 (7-1) 7-5 in one hour and 42 minutes.

Greek fifth seed Maria Sakkari whisked past Bulgaria's Viktoriya Tomova, winning 6-4 6-3 to set up a third-round meeting with German world number 103 Tatjana Maria, who upset Romania's 26th seed Sorana Cirstea.

Germany's Angelique Kerber, who won the title in 2018, made straightforward progress into the third round with a 6-3 6-3 win over Poland's Magda Linette. The 34-year-old will play either Belgium's Elise Mertens or Hungary's Panna Udvardy next.
