Jonny Brownlee shines in Stockholm

Jonny Brownlee moved a step closer to winning the Triathlon World Series title after victory in Stockholm.

Brownlee beat two-time world champion Javier Gomez, who out-ran the Yorkshireman at London 2012 for silver.

The Olympic bronze medallist, 22, has already won races in San Diego and Madrid and finished second behind his brother Alistair in Kitzbuhel.

A podium finish at the final race in Auckland in October should now be enough for him to win the World Series.

Brownlee, who has admitted to feeling "empty" after the Olympics, was pleased with the result of his first race since London 2012.

"I wasn't sure how I was going to feel after the Olympics," he said. "I haven't done a lot of training, but I don't think many people have. It was a tough race, it was very fast the whole way round.

"It was unusual because Javier's normally in the front pack and I'm used to being chased by him. I knew with about a kilometre to go that I had it."

Britain's Non Stanford finished sixth in the women's sprint race, crossing the line 38 seconds behind winner Lisa Norden of Sweden.

Brownlee will join Stanford, Vicky Holland and Will Clarke for Sunday's team relay event.

Olympic gold medallist Alistair Brownlee, 24, was ruled out of defending his World Series title through early season injury, and will instead race in the lucrative Hy-Vee triathlon in Iowa on 2 September.
