Olympic silver medallist Hayden Wilde has said he will have to stay in Japan for a "few weeks" as he recovers from breaking his collar bone and several ribs in a bike accident.

The New Zealander, who was second to Great Britain's Alex Yee after a dramatic conclusion to the men's triathlon race at the 2024 Olympics in Paris, wrote on social media: "Broken four ribs. Scapula broken. Injured lungs. Surrounded with the best help. Keep you posted.

"Pretty gutted after such a nice day."

In his instagram post, he added that he would have to remain in Japan "for a few weeks" because the injury to his lungs meant "it's not possible to travel".

He had finished seventh in a 10km running race in Tokyo on Saturday before the accident took place. He has not prodived any more details about the crash.

Wilde, who was third at the Olympics in Tokyo, won the season-opening men's race of this year's World Triathlon Championship Series event in Abu Dhabi in February.

The next race in the series takes place in Yokohama on 17 May.
