Non Stanford targeting 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow

Non Stanford hopes her performances in this season's World Triathlon Series will attract the attention of Wales' Commonwealth Games selectors.

Stanford produced a stunning sprint finish to take second place in the Series event in San Diego.

The 24-year-old edged out former world champion Emma Moffatt to secure her first WTS podium.

"It's always been a big aim of mine to put on a Welsh vest and race at the Commonwealth Games," Stanford said.

"The aim for this season is to maintain consistency and hopefully rounding the year off with a good world ranking.

"[And] also just to keep proving to the Commonwealth selectors that I'm a worthy member of the team and keep proving my case for selection for next year.

"It's not very often you get to represent Wales in the sport. The Commonwealth Games is a fantastic opportunity for us as a nation to showcase what we can do."

Stanford was delighted with her performance in California in the senior series after winning the World Under-23 title in Auckland in October 2012.

"After the World Under-23s last year I was determined to continue that form and continue progressing," Stanford added.

"I knew I was in good shape going into the race but when you step up to the World Series you're never quite sure how it's going to go.

"I wasn't sure how it would pan out but it went to plan and that's good.

"You're racing against girls who have got years and years of experience and who are stronger across all three disciplines.

"It is a step up but I've worked hard over the winter to make sure I was able to make that step up."

Stanford will not compete at the next World Series event in Yokohama in May in order to concentrate on training ahead of June's event in Madrid.
