IPC World Athletics: Aled Sion Davies wins second gold

Welsh athlete Aled Sion Davies has won his second gold medal at the IPC Athletics World Championships in Doha.

Davies won the F42 discus, throwing a world record 49.59m.

There was more Welsh success on Wednesday as Kyron Duke, 23, took bronze in the F41 javelin.

Davies took gold in the F42 shot put on the opening day of the event on 22 October and the 24-year-old from Bridgend won the discus by more than six meters.

"Going in there I wanted to smash 50 metres. I was in 50-plus shape. But I'm just happy to come here and get six great throws in, be pain free, and a gold medal as well," he said.

"This is probably the hardest World Championships I've ever had.

"Very nerve-wracking, there's some great competitors here but for me to coming in off the back of injury I wasn't in the best of shapes so I knew it was going to test me.

"But that's what sport is all about - fighting for those gold medals and I'm just happy I delivered on the big stage yet again."

Davies underwent surgery on a hernia 10 weeks before the start of the championships, and now turns his focus to the Paralympics in Rio next year.

His discus category will not be held in Rio, which means Davies is concentrating on the shot.

"I'm kind of seeing it as a blessing in disguise. I've never been able to put 100% focus on one event so I'm looking forward to see what I can do in the shot and were we can take it," he added.

Davies was one of three British gold medallists on Wednesday. Hannah Cockcroft took the T34 800m and Richard Whitehead won the T42 200m.

Britain has won 10 gold medals so far.
