Scotland to stage major curling events between 2016 and 2020

Scotland's David Murdoch is a two-time World champion and an Olympic silver medallist

Scotland will host the 2016 European Curling Championships and the 2020 World Men's Curling Championship.

Scotland will also stage the 2018 World Junior Curling Championships and the 2019 World Wheelchair Championships.

The European event will take place at the Braehead Arena in Renfrewshire, with the SSE Hydro in Glasgow the chosen venue for 2020.

Eve Muirhead's Scotland rink finished in the bronze medal position at this year's European Championships.

That matched their achievement at the Sochi Olympics in February, while Scotland's men, skipped by David Murdoch, left Russia with silver medals.

Muirhead, a four-time World junior gold-medal winner, was a European champion skip in 2011 and a World champion in 2013.

Murdoch has twice led Scotland to World titles, while three of his six European medals have been gold.

"Securing all four locations is a massive boost to the sport, not only internationally but particularly within Scotland as they look to build on interest in curling generated around the time of the Pyeongchang 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games," said World Curling Federation president Kate Caithness.

"Following on from the double host awards to Esbjerg in Denmark and Lohja, Finland, this form of multiple event bidding is becoming increasingly popular amongst our member associations and is proving to be an attractive proposition for the WCF."

Aberdeen held the European Championships in 2009 and Scotland last hosted a men's World Championship in 2000 when Canada's Greg McAulay won the title at Braehead.
