Half of Shetland schools facing closure

More than half of Shetland's schools could face closure or amalgamation under radical plans to shake up education across the islands.

Councillors will hold a meeting behind closed doors on Friday to discuss a range of options.

They could produce savings of between £1m and £4m.

A final decision on the future shape of education in the islands is expected to be made in the middle of June.

It was earlier decided knitting tuition was to end in schools in Shetland, to save about £130,000 a year.

The Accounts Commission is to hold a public hearing into the workings of Shetland Islands Council.

A recent Audit Scotland report was critical of the local authority.
