Much Wenlock sheltered homes and care home closure risk

Residents have been told a nursing home and sheltered housing scheme in Shropshire may be forced to close due to rising debt and maintenance costs.

Extra Care Charitable Trust said it had been running Lady Forester Community Nursing Home and Sheltered Housing Scheme in Much Wenlock at a loss.

It said the homes needed upgrading but it already owed about £333,000.

It said the losses were unsustainable and it was starting a six-week consultation about the homes' future.

The trust had planned to upgrade its facilities for its 21 residents but was refused planning permission.

It estimated that it would now cost about £2m to ensure the homes met current care standards.

It has assured residents and their families that it would not close the homes before 31 January 2011.
