Who are the men caught in the cold case review?

The cold case review operation by South Yorkshire Police has resulted in those whose crimes had gone undetected for years being brought to justice.

Here are some of the men who have been convicted:

Andrew Longmire

Longmire targeted women in their late teens and young mothers

Prolific offender Andrew Longmire raped a 26-year-old woman in her Sheffield home in front of her three-year-old daughter.

The child hid behind the settee as Longmire, 54, from Bolton, threatened his victim with a screwdriver before carrying out the attack, in September 1981.

A cold case review by South Yorkshire Police linked him to the 1981 attack for which he was given a life sentence. He had already been given 11 life sentences with a minimum of 20 years for 11 rapes in the 1980s, mainly carried out in the Greater Manchester area.

Stephen Robinson

Robinson attacked two women in 1994

Stephen Robinson, from Barnsley was jailed for 15 years for two rapes in the town in 1984.

Robinson, who was 50 at the time of his arrest in 2006, was also convicted of a robbery and perverting the course of justice.

Kevin Shaw

Shaw carried out the rape in 1989

Kevin Shaw, from Dronfield, was convicted of raping a 19-year-old woman in the Stannington area of Sheffield in 1989 . He was caught after DNA from his victim matched a sample he provided when he was arrested over a separate matter in 2007.

Shaw, who was 53 when he was convicted in May 2008, was sentenced to 12 years in prison. This was later reduced to 10 years on appeal.

Jeremiah Sheridan

Sheridan raped a disabled women in 1991

Sheridan, 36, from Essex, was jailed for 16-and-a-half years in 2009 after being convicted of raping a disabled woman in her Sheffield home in 1991.

Officers matched evidence from the original inquiry with records on the national database to identify Sheridan as the rapist.

His prison sentence was later reduced to nine years.

Brian Wright

Wright raped a woman at a Sheffield bus station

Brian Wright, 49, of no fixed address, was jailed for six-and-a-half years in March 2009 for raping a woman in toilets at Sheffield's Pond Street bus station in February 1977.

He was sentenced to life in prison in 1982 for two other rapes and was on licence after being in custody for most of his adult life. Wright was charged with the 1977 crime, after being linked to the case by DNA. This was the force's oldest cold case review.

Joshua The High Priest

Robert Wilson changed his name by deed poll to Joshua The High Priest

Joshua the High Priest, 51, raped an 18-year-old woman in 1984 and sexually assaulted a 17-year-old in 1985.

Priest, of Sunny Bank, Broomhall, was re-arrested in connection with both offences last year after a a DNA match.

He was jailed for 17 years after admitting the attacks at Sheffield Crown Court in October 2009.

Harry Musson

Musson raped a woman in her Barnsley home

Harry Musson, 56, raped a 35-year-old woman in her Barnsley home in September 1990. The case went unsolved until the review, with advancements in DNA techniques leading to a breakthrough in the case.

Musson, of Foster Street, Barnsley, was jailed for 12 years after being found guilty of rape and burglary in December 2009, nearly 20 years after carrying out the crimes.

Paul Shane Simpson

Simpson was jailed for eight years

Paul Shane Simpson, 41, from Sheffield, was found guilty of raping a woman in the city in 1989.

His victim had been out for the night and was making her way home when he attacked her.

He was jailed for eight years in November 2009.
