The former commander for military operations in Afghanistan has been speaking about the high number of casualties sustained recently.

Since early May, five royal marines from Taunton-based 40 Commando have been killed in Helmand province during their current deployment.

Major General Gordon Messenger said the threat troops faced was "as high as any unit in the whole of Afghanistan".

He added the Taliban tactic of roadside bombs was "taking its toll".
