Bolton beer goggle shoot-out to deter football drinking

  • Published

England football fans in Bolton have been taking part in a police penalty shoot-out, wearing specially-designed "beer goggles".

The goggles, which make wearers feel uncoordinated, are designed to simulate the effects of drinking too much alcohol.

Participants learnt how their scoring abilities can be impaired.

Police staged the event next to Nelson Square to help deter fans from over-indulging.

Big screen

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) have pledged to minimise drink-related incidents during the competition.

Outdoor screens in Manchester have been confined to the Castlefield Arena, where 15,000 free tickets have been taken for the first England match against USA.

Alcohol cannot be taken into the arena, but a bar is available inside.

GMP's Chief Constable Peter Fahy has asked fans to behave like "World Cup Heroes" to ensure a peaceful World Cup.
