Red kites were fitted with satellite tags for the project

Three red kites adopted by primary schools for a RSPB Scotland-run conservation project have been lost.

One of the satellite tagged birds of prey died in an accident, but the RSPB said it suspected the other two had "perished in unusual circumstances".

The Highlands schools involved in the Eyes to the Skies project have been told of the situation.

Pupils had nicknamed the kites - who are among 10 who were initially tagged - Tweety Pie, Sky and Ruby.

RSPB Scotland said: "It has certainly been a sombre time for us all involved in the project and these instances serve to highlight the vulnerability of our local red kite juveniles as they negotiate their way into adulthood."
