Car in Metro train crash at Howden Station crossing

An investigation is under way after a car collided with a Metro train at a crossing on North Tyneside.
The incident happened at the level crossing next to Howdon Station, on Sunday night.
The Volkswagen Passat was damaged but the driver managed to escaped without injury. Metro services were suspended while the vehicle was recovered.
Nexus and Northumbria Police are carrying out a joint investigation into how the car came to be on the tracks.
The crossing has no barriers but red warning lights operate.
