GPs meet over chemical health fears in Cambridgeshire

Doctors who work near a former chemical factory are meeting NHS bosses in Cambridgeshire to discuss concerns about the health of their patients.

The concerns centre on the former Bayer CropScience complex in Hauxton which is being decontaminated to make way for new houses to be built.

People living nearby have complained that the clean-up creates a foul smell.

South Cambridgeshire District Council has told residents that the odour is unlikely to pose a health risk.

GPs have been keeping a record of people reporting breathing problems which will be discussed at the meeting in Harston.

The factory, established in the 1940s, produced pesticides and herbicides.

The council and the Environment Agency held sessions earlier this month to discuss concerns.

Work on the contaminated ground is due to completed in September 2011.
