Man remanded over killing of soldier in Derby

A 36-year-old man has been remanded in custody for a week charged with murdering a soldier outside a Derby Army recruitment office 18 years ago.

Declan Duffy was not required to enter a plea when he appeared at Birmingham Crown Court via videolink from a prison in the north of England.

Mr Duffy is accused of murdering Sgt Michael Newman on 14 April, 1992.

Judge William Davis QC, ordered Mr Duffy to appear by videolink at Wolverhampton Crown Court next Friday.

There was no application for bail during the proceedings, which lasted for four minutes.

Derbyshire Police announced earlier this week that Mr Duffy had been charged with Sgt Newman's murder, after being brought to England from Northern Ireland.

The prison where Duffy is being held was not identified in court.
