Man who died in park shooting named as suspect

A man who died after a double shooting in a London park in which a woman was also injured has been identified as a suspect in the incident by police.

Emergency services were called at about 19:00 BST on Wednesday to Clissold Park, Stoke Newington, where they found the pair, both in their 40s, with gunshot wounds.

The man, referred to as "the suspect" by the Metropolitan Police, was pronounced dead in hospital. The woman, who was shot in the torso, has been discharged from hospital after treatment.

Det Supt Oliver Richter said: "We believe the man and woman are known to one another and, at this time, we are treating it as an isolated incident and there is no wider risk to the public."

The firearm has been recovered and a crime scene remains in place.

Police said: "The suspect, a man in his 40s, was also found at the scene with gunshot wounds.

"Despite the best efforts of the emergency services and medical staff, he died in hospital later that evening."

Det Supt Oliver Richter said: "We understand this is a deeply distressing incident for those involved, the witnesses in the park and the community in the surrounding area.

"We urge anyone who was at the scene and may be able to help us to reach out."

Specialist officers are supporting the woman and her family and police are trying to contact the relatives of those involved.

Hackney Council said it was "supporting the police with their investigations". The park reopened on Thursday afternoon.
