Guernsey mental health laws to be updated

People with mental health problems in Guernsey could get more say in their care, Health and Social Services Minister Hunter Adam said.

He said new mental health laws, which were last updated in 1939, would improve the situation for those undergoing treatment.

The new laws will include provision of a mental health review panel.

Critics of the present law claim it is outdated and prevents some islanders from receiving the treatment they need.

Mr Adam said: "The most important aspect of this new law is the appeal process.

"This law brings in a mental health review panel which protects the client.

"They can ask for a review of their containment etcetera.

"Now the client can also choose who helps them manage their treatment."
