India census shows poverty challenge
The Indian government has released its latest census. Its population has grown by over 17% in the last decade, to 1.21 billion people.
The figures also indicate the kind of social and economic progress India has made over the past decade, but also highlight where India lags behind.
The measure of poverty that comes out of the census is particularly important this time.
Experts say it is only now that the government has the economic clout to seriously turn its attention to helping some of the country's poorest people.
