Two lanes out of four on the M25 between Surrey and Kent have reopened after a seven-hour closure.

A 9.4 mile (15km) stretch of the motorway was fully closed following a "serious" crash involving a Vauxhall Astra at about 06:00 BST, Surrey Police said.

Police are appealing for witnesses after a car left the motorway and travelled down the embankment before coming to a stop on Water Lane, which runs under the motorway.

Traffic data firm Inrix said two lanes had reopened at about 13:30. Delays of up to 90 minutes had been reported.

The driver received medical treatment, police said, with no other injured parties reported.

South East Coast Ambulance Service confirmed crews attended and one person was treated at the scene before being taken to St George's Hospital in London.

The closure was in place on the anti-clockwise carriageway between junctions six for Godstone and five for the A21/M26 link.

Water Lane was also closed northbound after the junction with Park Road.

Traffic data firm Inrix warned of "severe delays" as accident investigation work was carried out.

During the closure, Inrix said there was congestion on the anti-clockwise carriageway back to junction seven for the M23 and queueing for three miles clockwise past the Clacket Lane services due to onlookers.

Surrey Police said closures had been in place while they gathered the evidence required for an investigation into the collision.

They added: "We appreciate that this will unavoidably cause disruption for motorists and apologise for the inconvenience.

"Officers are working hard to get the lanes reopened as soon as possible."

Congestion was reported on the diversion route on the A25, which runs parallel to the motorway through Limpsfield, Oxted and Sundridge.

Inrix also said at 13:15 two lanes were also closed on the clockwise M25 nearby, with queueing traffic for 2 miles (3.2km).

The partial closure was due to a broken down vehicle and was in place from junction seven for the M23 to junction eight at Reigate.
