A man has potentially life-threatening injuries after he was assaulted in Exeter city centre, police have said.

It happened at about 21:30 BST on Sunday outside Sainsbury's Local in Sidwell Street and the victim - a man in his 50s - was taken to hospital with a head injury.

Devon and Cornwall Police said a cordon had been set up on the street and a 34-year-old man from Exeter remained in custody after being arrested on suspicion of wounding with intent.

The force said an investigation was ongoing with detectives keen to speak to a man on a bicycle, who might have been a delivery worker, who is thought to have witnessed the incident and provided aid to the victim.

Anyone with information has been asked to contact police.
