A Surrey council is offering to fund the removal of graffiti in a one-off initiative as part of ongoing efforts to address a recent surge in incidents.

Mole Valley District Council (MVDC) said it will pay for graffiti to be removed from private properties, as well as those it owns, for a week from 1 September.

This decision has been made following a marked increase in graffiti incidents, particularly in Dorking.

Councillor Caroline Joseph, cabinet member for services and security, said the council's offer was "about more than just cleaning walls".

"It is about restoring confidence in our public spaces and showing that we take antisocial behaviour seriously," she said.

During the week of action, residents will be able to report graffiti on their property via MVDC's website.

Subject to the landowner granting consent and signing a waiver form, partner company Amey will look to remove the graffiti free of charge on behalf of MVDC.

Ms Joseph added: "By taking swift and visible action, we hope to send a clear message that Mole Valley is a place where people feel safe, respected and proud of their surroundings."
