An attempted murder investigation has been launched after a man was shot outside a bar in Bury.

The 39-year-old man was shot in the wrist during an incident on Silver Street at approximately 23:43BST on Wednesday, Greater Manchester Police said.

Armed officers and the ambulance service attended, and the man was treated at the scene before being taken to hospital, where he is reported to be in a stable condition.

A 19-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and remains in custody for questioning, a police spokesperson added.

'Isolated attack'

“This was a shocking attack, and an example of the type of violence that has no place in our community," said Det Insp Andy Day, from Greater Manchester Police's Bury division.

"A man has been seriously injured as a result of a senseless shooting, and the lives of others were put in harm's way," he said.

Det Insp Day said it was "vital that those responsible are brought to justice". He added police believed the shooting was an isolated attack and there was no wider threat to the community.

Police said they would maintain an increased presence in the area over the coming days as part of the investigation, and to reassure the community.

They urged anyone with information, CCTV or dashcam footage to contact the police.
