A water play area will be closed due to damage caused by the "unprecedented wet winter", a council said.

The Splash Park in Wellingborough would usually open on Good Friday but will now undergo repair.

North Northamptonshire Council said there had been "exceptional levels of flooding experienced at the Embankment" where the park is based.

Matt Binley from the authority said: "It's disappointing we are not able to open as usual."

North Northamptonshire Council said Wellingborough experienced unprecedented flooding during the winter

The council said it has only recently assessed the site as the Splash Park and adjacent car park were underwater "for such a long time".

Remedial works will include a deep clean to all surfaces, replacement of damaged artificial grass and sail shades, and sanitisation of all equipment.

Mr Binley, the executive member for Highways, Travel and Assets, said: "The rainfall over this winter has been exceptional and as such the Embankment has been flooded for long periods of time resulting in damage to the site, which needs repairing as well as essential checks to the equipment.

"We want to make sure the site is safe and ready to be used, when the summer, hopefully, arrives."

The council plans to reopen for the season in late April, dependant on the works being completed and the weather.
