An investigation has been launched into claims a football player was subjected to a homophobic slur during a match.

The non-league game was abandoned between Chew Magna FC and Axbridge United, near Bristol, on Saturday after it was alleged "no action taken" against the person who reportedly made the comment.

The Somerset Football Association (FA) said it is "working closely with all parties involved to investigate"

Chew Magna FC said: "Having been on the receiving end of this a couple of times in recent years, and due to no action being taken against the player in question, the Chew Magna team were unanimous in their decision to leave the field of play."

Chew Magna FC, who were playing at home at the time, added: "There is no place for abuse of any kind in football."

A Somerset FA spokesperson said they were unable to comment further until the investigation is complete.

"Somerset FA does not condone homophobia and discrimination, whether on or off the pitch.

"We remain committed to ensuring that football in Somerset is a safe, inclusive, and welcoming environment for everyone," they added.

The BBC has approached Axbridge United for comment.
