New bigger enclosure for zoo's four lynx brothers
- Published
Four Eurasian Lynx have moved into a new woodland enclosure at a zoo near Telford.
The brothers - Cain, Lucifer, Amenadiel and Zadkiel - were born at Hoo Zoo and Dinosaur World two years ago.
The Eurasian Lynx was previously native to the UK but went extinct in the country about 1,300 years ago, the zoo said, due to habitat loss, human persecution and a decline of their prey.
The zoo said it made the decision to move their four lynx into a larger habitat now the brothers were fully grown.
“Our four lynx brothers are ambassadors for their species and are a stark reminder that if we don’t take conservation seriously, then we will lose some of the world’s most amazing creatures,” said the zoo’s owner, Will Dorrell.
Eurasian Lynx have been reintroduced to countries in mainland Europe, including France, Germany and Austria, he said.
There are no plans to reintroduce the Hoo Zoo lynx into the wild, but the zoo does hope to build an expanded woodland habitat for them.
