Two people who made a mark on their home town are being celebrated in a new art installation.

Hairy Biker Dave Myers and lighthouse keeper Peggy Braithwaite were chosen by the people of Barrow as their favourite Barrovians.

Artist Hannah Fox, who was commissioned to create an artwork dedicated to each of them in two, red telephone boxes, said it was “an honour” to be involved.

Thousands of bikers celebrating Dave Day on Saturday will be among the first people to see the displays in the phone boxes on Abbey Road, which will be there all summer.

A public vote organised by arts project BarrowFull came up with Dave and Peggy from a long list of famous people from the town.

The late Dave Myers, one half of the Hairy Bikers duo, loved food and motorbikes, and the phone box art features a waistcoat in his honour.

And an apron dedicated to Walney Lighthouse keeper Peggy Braithwaite shows the birds that can be found along the Cumbrian coast.

Hannah said she had had a few weeks to do her research and great help from local people, the Barrow archives and the Dock Museum.

Hannah felt a great responsibility when creating the work so soon after Myers' death, she said: “I'm celebrating this incredible person as well as I can for this.

"This is not only for the installation but for Dave, this incredible gathering of all of the people that love him."
