Water improvements under way ahead of triathlon

The swim leg of the Outlaw Triathlon in Nottinghamshire was replaced with a run in 2024

Organisers of an annual triathlon say water quality improvements are under way at the event's venue after the swim leg of last year's contest was cancelled due to potentially harmful algae.
Hundreds of athletes took part in the Outlaw Triathlon at the National Water Sports Centre at Nottinghamshire's Holme Pierrepont Country Park in 2024.
But the swim portion of the event was replaced with a run two days before the event after high levels of blue-green algae were detected in the Regatta Lake.
On Wednesday, the organiser and venue, run by private firm Serco, said "improvements were on the way" ahead of this year's race.

Blue-green algae was found in the Regatta Lake at the National Water Sports Centre
Blue-green algae is a collection of microscopic organisms that are naturally present in lakes and streams.
It is known to release toxins that can cause skin irritation in humans or stomach upsets if a lot of affected water is ingested.
A joint statement from event organisers and the park said: "After months of assessments and working on solutions, we're pleased to confirm that improvements are on the way."
The organisers said the water would be treated with a safe dye to "help control excessive vegetation".
Ultrasonic devices were also being reinstalled to combat blue-green algae - a "proven method to keep the water in top condition".
The triathlon usually comprises a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride and a marathon run, while there are a number of other Outlaw-run sporting events hosted by the centre throughout in July.
"We're committed to giving you the best race day possible and can't wait to welcome you to an even better venue for this year's event," the organisers added added.
