Council plans to ban street traders without permit

The ban would initially apply to the town centre before being rolled out elsewhere, Barnsley Council said

Street traders operating without permission could soon be banned in Barnsley.

A consultation on the plans, which have been put forward by Barnsley Council, started earlier this month and runs until 11 March.

Under the proposals, every street in the town would be designated as Consent Streets, the local authority said.

The policy would make it illegal for stallholders to sell goods without street trading consent.

The council said the idea would ensure "that we have a clear framework in place to authorise and regulate street trading."

Under the current proposals, the ban would come into effect across Barnsley town centre in September.

The policy would then expanded to include all streets in the borough in March 2025.
