Is Trump allowed to demolish part of the White House to build a ballroom?

The Trump administration has been defending the demolition work which has begun on part of the White House, to allow the construction of a new $250m (£149m) ballroom. It said "for over 100 years, presidents have enhanced the White House".

But how big a project is President Trump's ballroom and does he have the power to order such major work on the building? BBC Verify reporter Jake Horton has been taking a closer look.
