Work starts to turn empty Wilko into college site

The Wilko was one of hundreds of high street stores that closed across the country

Work has started to turn a former Wilko store in Sutton-in-Ashfield into a new college site for construction students.
Ashfield District Council took over the building in Outram Street earlier this year, before leasing the premises to West Notts College.
The former shop, which closed in 2023 when Wilko entered administration, will be used by students aged 16 to 18, adult learners, and apprentices.
The council said an influx of more students would make the town "livelier in the day" and increase footfall.

The college said it was looking forward to seeing the new campus "come to life"
The conversion will involve internal works to create classrooms, workshop space, offices, and student social space across three floors, plus renovation and redesign of the building's façade.
The college previously said £4m in government funding would be used to convert the building.
Matthew Relf, the council's lead for growth, regeneration and local planning, said: "Wilko has stood empty for a couple of years now and we are so pleased to be able to bring it back into use.
"It's a fantastic space, and will make a great new addition to West Notts College's offering."
The college said the new building will enable students to learn skills and qualifications in plumbing and electrical installation.
