Motorists were stuck in traffic after a lorry lost its trailer on a motorway.

Four lanes were initially shut on the southbound M1 between junction 13, for Bedford and Milton Keynes, and junction 12, for Flitwick in Bedfordshire, following the incident at about 09:00 GMT. All lanes have since reopened.

National Highways said the lorry had come to a rest sideways on the carriageway, and there were traffic officers and recovery vehicles at the scene.

It previously warned of delays on the approach to junction 13 of up to two hours and said a diversion route was in place.
