Police have appealed for witnesses to come forward after a man was left unconscious following a serious assault in Nottingham city centre.

Police said a man was punched and fell unconscious after hitting his head on the ground in Thurland Street shortly before 05:15 BST on Saturday.

The force said the man was taken to Queen's Medical Centre where he remained in a stable condition.

Officers have appealed for witnesses and anyone with information about the assault to come forward.

Det Insp Lisa Jones said: "We are working to understand what happened in the moments before, during and after this assault and are asking for the public's help in tracking down the person or people responsible."
