Beverley Christmas festival - all you need to know

Organisers of a festive market claimed to be one of the UK's largest is expecting huge crowds of more than 50,000 people.

The Beverley Festival of Christmas is being held in the East Yorkshire town on Sunday.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council said the annual event would feature Victorian-themed market stalls, fairground rides, arts and crafts, food, drink and street entertainment.

Anne Handley, leader of the council, said the event brought "a huge economic benefit to the town".

“We look forward to welcoming more than 50,000 people to Beverley for the Festival of Christmas, our flagship tourism event of the year," she added.

When and where is it happening?

The festival takes place across Saturday Market, Wednesday Market and North Bar Within between 10:00 and 16:00 GMT on Sunday.

There are also activities taking place at Flemingate shopping centre, Beverley Minster, St Mary’s Church, The Guildhall, Toll Gavel Church and East Riding Theatre.

Santa's sleigh will set off from Wednesday Market at 10:00 and parade through Butcher Row and Toll Gavel to Saturday Market, where it will stay until about 13:30.

How to get there

The council is encouraging visitors to travel by public transport.

The authority said a free park and ride service would operate from Beverley Racecourse over the weekend, with the first bus departing at 09:00 and then running every 15 or 20 minutes to and from a stop outside North Bar on Wylies Rd.

The last bus will return to the racecourse at 17:00 each day.

Road closures and parking

Road closures will be in place, external on the day from the early hours of the morning and parking has been suspended until 19:00 at some of the town's car parks.

However, spaces would be available on Norwood, Grayburn Lane, Grovehill, Flemingate and Butcher Row, according to the council.

There will also be limited Blue Badge parking available in Grayburn Lane and East Riding of Yorkshire Council's car park, off Champney Road, opposite the Treasure House.

Weekly Saturday Market

The weekly Saturday Market will still take place on Saturday and will feature a festive theme.
