Work to start on historic hall's kitchen garden

A CGI image of what the development would look like. There are four separate single-storey buildings arranged in a u-shape. All are long constructions. Two have multiple triangular roofs, a bit like large industrial units. On the right-hand side are two smaller buildings with single roofs. In a manicured lawn area inside the "U", a line of market stalls and a food truck can be seen. Thick woodland surrounds the scene.Image source, West House

The £1.9m project includes a cafe and a pottery workshop

  • Published

Work is set to start on a £1.9m project to turn a historic hall's former kitchen garden into a community space including a pottery studio and café.

West House, a charity which supports people with learning difficulties, is behind the project to refurbish the walled garden within Hall Park in Workington, Cumbria.

The project, part of a £10m scheme to widen the access to the town, will provide training opportunities in horticulture, catering and customer service.

The work begins this month and is expected to be finished by autumn, with the park remaining open throughout.

The development sits next to the Grade II listed Workington Hall which famously hosted Mary Queen of Scots when she was fleeing Scotland.

Other work in the park will concentrate on footpaths and cycleways.
