Libraries in Manchester and Ukraine have been twinned in a gesture of solidarity.

Manchester Libraries has linked up with the Lviv Regional Youth Library to share information about language, literature and culture, and develop joint initiatives.

Councillor John Hacking, Manchester City Council's executive member for Skills, Employment and Leisure said: "We have a strong Ukrainian community, and we have been eager to show solidarity and connect with them in this way."

He said libraries were "the bedrock of communities and an important resource for our young people".

Solidarity demonstration

The council said since the war with Russia broke out, "libraries in Ukraine have had to adapt to changing conditions supporting their communities' mental health, countering misinformation, and providing practical help".

Manchesters libraries have "Library of Sanctuary" status which recognises and celebrates libraries that go above and beyond to welcome sanctuary seekers and refugees.

They "demonstrate solidarity and inclusivity and the benefits of a welcoming culture to everyone".
