Police investigating last month's riots in Staffordshire have made their 100th arrest in connection with disorder in the county.

Trouble flared in Hanley in Stoke-on-Trent on 3 August and outside a hotel housing asylum seekers in Tamworth on 4 August, with police facing a barrage of missiles and abuse.

A 21-year-old man was arrested on Thursday morning over the disturbances in Hanley.

Assistant Chief Constable Stuart Ellison said CCTV and drone footage was still being checked which would lead to further arrests.

Officers involved in the disorder in Hanley said metal poles and bricks were thrown at them as well as their being spat at and verbally abused.

In Tamworth the following day, they were met with petrol bombs and fireworks.

The 21-year-old was arrested as part of a series of raids at several addresses which the BBC attended.

"We've been to the suspect's home address, we've made attempts to locate him there which were unsuccessful, but we've found some documents inside his home address which suggest he was working as a contractor a short distance away," Sgt Gary Taylor said.

Officers apprehended the man at a building site where he was working, he added.

A further eight people aged between 16 and 67 were arrested on Thursday in Tamworth and north Staffordshire, the force said.

Mr Ellison said he expected another hundred arrests after more investigations.

"We are going through laboriously a lot of CCTV footage now, captured from our drone from the force helicopter, from the officers on the ground," he said.

"It takes time to go through all that and we have now got the first hundred arrests in.

"Significantly, we have had over half of those arrested charged with serious offences related to the disorder we'll have another hundred in yet.

"If anyone in the community is thinking, 'oh, I got away with that now'... they haven't."
