'Strangest' items left on buses in 2024

Significant numbers of big, bulky items were found by the operators' staff

Bus companies in Sussex have revealed the "quirkiest" items left on buses last year.

Brighton & Hove Buses and Metrobus, which operates across Sussex, Surrey and Kent said a canoe, a fridge and false teeth were among the possessions found by their staff.

More than 13,000 items were left on the two companies' buses in 2024, they said in a joint press release.

Wallets, phones, keys, hats, and scarves were most commonly left, though the bus companies said a "surprisingly large" number of large items were found.

These included an urn containing ashes, grass trimmer, microwave, wardrobe, electric cooker, two safes, tent, and a pool cue.

Among smaller items were a suitcase full of shoes, canvas depicting 'the ten commandments', gold purse containing a single Pokémon card, and what the bus companies called a "rude drawing".

Cash was handed to staff on more than 700 occasions with a total value of £9,000, they added.

"Most of it being returned to owners," said the bus companies.

All unclaimed items were donated by Brighton & Hove Buses and Metrobus to local charities raising almost £1,000.
