A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after an attack which left another man in a critical condition.

The 26-year-old was arrested just before 22:00 BST on Monday and was being held in custody, West Midlands Police said.

The attack took place on Springfield Road in the Kings Heath area of Birmingham at about 17:00 on Monday.

The victim, who is 53, remained in a critical condition in hospital on Tuesday, the police said.

West Midlands Police said its officers had been carrying out CCTV, house-to-house and other inquiries.

The road, which was closed initially, has been re-opened.

Det Sgt Shereen Ballentine said it had been "an appalling assault" at a busy time of day.
