Weekend closure for road outside rail station

A road outside York railway station will close over an April weekend as work starts to transform the station’s entrance.

Queen Street Bridge will close from 20:00 BST on Friday 19 April until 06:00 on Monday 22 April.

A temporary road will be created for pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles to use over the course of the weekend, the city council said.

The work forms part of a wider scheme to improve access to the station, which is scheduled to be completed in 2025.

Contractors have also applied for a second closure of Queen Street Bridge, which would run the following weekend between 26 April and 29 April.

City of York Council is currently considering the second closure, the Local Democracy Reporting Service said.

Councillor Peter Kilbane, the council's deputy leader, said the York Station Gateway project would "bring new public spaces, as well as active and sustainable travel facilities".

"Such works are always disruptive and we apologise in advance for the inconvenience caused," he said.

"Our contractors will do all they can to minimise disruption."

The project is designed to improve access to the station, including removing Queen Street Bridge, providing new spaces for taxis and buses and moving station car parks.
