A set of double yellow lines which were painted around a roundabout in Herefordshire leaving drivers "bewildered" have been removed.

The road markings were first spotted around the central reservation on Central Avenue in Hereford in January.

A spokesperson for Herefordshire Council has confirmed the lines have been removed after they were painted in "error".

They explained it was not "usual" practice and the double yellow lines were removed as soon as possible.

In a statement, Herefordshire Council told the BBC: "An error by one of our contractors led to the lines being put in place.

"Putting double yellow lines on roundabouts is not usual practice and once we realised that they had been put in place we took steps to remove them as soon as possible."
