Double decker bus bursts into flames on A30

Devon and Cornwall Police said there was also a fuel spillage at the scene

A double decker bus burst into flames as it travelled along a dual carriageway in Cornwall on Monday.

The fire on the westbound A30 near Bodmin led to the road being closed from just after 09:00 BST.

Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service (CFRS) said the bus was "well alight" when crews from Bodmin and Liskeard arrived, and they were able to swiftly extinguish the flames.

The vehicle was not carrying any passengers and the driver escaped uninjured, the fire service and bus operator Cornwall by Kernow said.

Devon and Cornwall Police said a road closure was put in place while the fire and a large fuel spillage were dealt with.

The force said one lane was reopened at 10:20 and the road was fully reopened at 12:15.

Two fire engines from Bodmin and a water carrier from Liskeard went to the scene

CFRS said two fire engines from Bodmin and a water carrier from Liskeard attended the scene.

They said: "Firefighters used two hosereel jets and two breathing apparatus to extinguish the fire.

"The crew continued to damp down and check the interior of the bus for fire spread by removing some of the seating."

Bus operator Cornwall by Kernow confirmed the "driver was unharmed".

It added: "Investigations are now under way to uncover the cause of the incident."
