Plans have been put forward for a new development on the site of a former care home in Nottinghamshire to help with a "shortfall" in affordable housing.

Ashfield District Council has submitted plans itself for 20 new council homes in Kirkby-in-Ashfield on land off Fairhaven.

The spot is the site of the former Kirklands Residential Care Home and Day Care Centre which closed in 2016 and was demolished in 2020.

The development would be a mix of two and three bed semi-detached homes, two two-bed bungalows and one and two-bed flats but there is currently no confirmed timescale for the project.

New road

The council's Housing Annual Report for 2023-2024, said it had 6,680 council-run properties and about 4,395 people on its waiting list, the Local Democracy Reporting Service said.

Planning papers said: "The proposed development will make a noteworthy contribution to affordable housing provision in Kirkby in Ashfield and the wider Ashfield district.

"By developing this site, the affordable provision will assist with the shortfall of affordable housing within the Ashfield district."

The document added the plans for the "100 percent affordable homes" aimed to make a "noteworthy contribution" to the housing options available in the town and wider district.

The new homes would be accessed from the south by building a new road from Fairhaven.

A decision on the scheme will be decided by the authority's planning department at a later stage.
