A man has been arrested following the evacuation of 20 homes in Rotherham.

South Yorkshire Police said emergency services were called to Gerard Road just before 20:30 BST on Thursday to reports of a concern for safety.

A police spokesperson said it was later reported there had been a gas leak at one of the properties, prompting the evacuation of nearby houses.

A 36-year-old man continues to be held on suspicion of arson/criminal damage with intent to endanger life, they added.

Police said residents had since been allowed to return to their homes and a police cordon had been lifted.

South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said in order to deliver a "safe conclusion", crews had to isolate the power.
