A council has began recruiting lifeguards for two beaches it owns ahead of summer.

Canterbury City Council wants people to apply to cover positions at Herne Bay and Tankerton beaches from May until September.

The role requires lifeguards to monitor and advise beach users and to coordinate rescue activities in line with the council's procedures around beach safety.

Applicants need to have a lifeguard qualification or an equivalent lifesaving qualification.

The council said knowledge of the specific beaches was required, as well as being a good communicator and having a confident and approachable manner.
